It has been an age old debate in Malayalam on what has been the impact of mimicry on films here, over the years. Mukesh and Jagadeesh have been known for some of such comic capers in the past and they have tried to repeat the same old tricks in director Viji Thampy’s Natakame Ulakam. But the sad part is that it looks thoroughly jaded and ineffective in a big way.
It’s quite a tough task to remember what the storyline is once you get out of theatres after watching this film and it gives the feeling that the sequences were decided on the set, day after day. Omanakkuttan (Mukesh) is the manager of a bank, headed by his father in law (Jagathy Sreekumar), who hates him. Pappan (Jagadeesh) is a peon there but he, along with Omanakkuttan, spends more time practicing plays. Nandana (Saranya Mohan), who is love with Murali (Vinu Mohan), comes to become the heroine in one of the plays.
Some strange happenings, coincidences and silly scenes later, Suraj Venjarammoodu makes his appearance in the village to direct a film. The shooting starts but after a while Omanakkuttan becomes the film’s hero, scenarist and eventually, the director.
As you keep wondering at the sudden happenings, there is more boring comedy, melodrama and pathetic dialogues coming up. The actors try hard to tickle the funny bone the way they did more than a decade back, but the jokes look too old fashioned. The less said about the script, the better.
Almost every actor, as a result, just sleepwalks through their parts. The actors including Mukesh, Jagadeesh, Jagathy Sreekumar and Suraj Venjarammoodu tries to repeat their trademark antics but the script is tad too weak to challenge them. Vinu Mohan, Saranya Mohan and Sarayu have nothing much to do.
Natakame Ulakam surprises the viewer with its inanity. If you are looking for meaningful cinema, this is not the one for you.
