Movie Review Bhagirathi Kannada 2012

‘Bhagirathi’ is the ancient folk tale brought on silver screen by Dr Baraguru Ramachandrappa is all about the sacrifice of the youngest daughter of head of the village family for the purpose of acquiring water.

This is a superstitious belief of the past. On the silver screen it is explained with different characters relating to this sacrifice. Bhagirathi (Bhavana) and Mahadevaraya (Kishore) fall in love and marry after a few hiccups from family. They relate their love to the preparation of a lake and in the same lake first Bagirathi ends her life and later Mahadevaraya also dies in the same place.

Mahadevaraya is in the army of a king and in his absence the priest of the village going in to the details ancient works tells that the reason for not getting water to the lake needs a sacrifice. That sacrifice of a daughter in law of head of the village is essential. At this point the eldest daughter in law of the house Mallavva (Thara) hearing the predictions is shocked and she is in the presumption that she is the target. When Mallanna Gowda and his wife discuss on the issue and come to a conclusion that youngest daughter should be sacrificed at this point of time Bhagirathi over hear it.

Now the two daughters in laws of the house are mental tension and the scenes are filled with emotions. Finally when the day comes for the sacrifice when Bhagirathi name is announced Mallavva is shocked. Bhagirathi happily sacrifice her life and a few minutes later her husband comes from far off place and he also gives up his life. The true love of Bhagirathi and Mahadevaraya also comes to an end.

This is not the kind of film for silver screen to suit the present generation. The oldies are not coming to the theatres to watch this kind of ‘Bhagirathi’ that is on superstitious belief. The younger generation pooh-pooh at this type of subject. In a television serial this could be interesting as most of the family audiences are glued to these kinds of subject in soap operas.

Dr Baraguru Ramachandrappa has made quite an interesting screenplay and given room for the confusions. He has written the dialogues and songs very well for the film. The leftist approach is also seen in one of the songs. The dialogues like ‘Manege Benki Bidre Arisbahudu how about for ‘manasige’ are typical of Dr Baraguru. Madhuve Admele nee Vidhave Adhe…Naa Madhuve Munche Vidhave...explains the height of love of Bhagirathi to Mahadevaraya plus Mahadevaraya telling his father that he will die in the waterless lake when he does not agree for marriage with Bagirathi that eventually happens at the end of the film.

The love that blossom at one place also ends at the same place in this ‘Bhagirathi’. The main bottleneck of this film is the easily understandable screenplay.

Prof and Dr Baraguru Ramachandrappa doing the ancient tale ‘Makki Ka Makki’ he should have given a thought to adjust to the present social conditions.

The need of lakes and water in the lakes are very much relevant topic today in many places. The director has not shown the sufferings of the people without water. The main focus of suffering for water and need of lake should have been strongly emphasized.

The situational songs are well adjusted by Dr Baraguru Ramachandrappa. Songs in Baraguru Ramachandrappa films is not given that prominence. In this one there three well written songs by the director that gather interest.

This is not a fitting film for the present image of Kishor. Imagine Kishor crying and begging for permission. He is a hard guy on silver screen. The film ‘Bhagirathi’ looks awful for him. He should have been very strong and revolutionary in his thoughts and process.

It is misfit again for Bhavana. The childish dialogue delivery sometimes becomes very serious. The facial expression of Thara Anuradha is much better. Dr Srinath has given his best. Padmavasanthi and Hema Chaudhary are OK.

The cinematography of Harish Sandekoppa is very bright when it comes to the outdoor locations. A competent job has come from new cameraman.
V Manohar is the major plus point of this film because of songs like Kere andaare bari kere alla.... and Neevu aluva odeyaru naavu aluva badavaru....anna kodi chinna beda… this is where we see Baraguru Ramachandrappa.

There is a lapse in the print media watched as for as editing is concerned. Secondly the fastness of movement of scenes was very much wanted.

Last but not the Least – We want ‘Kere’ not via ‘Kerege Haara’.

NOT A CONVINCING FILM – Score 2/5

Camera - Harish Sandekoppa
Music - V Manohar
